Overview

Landermeads is a family led, family run and family focussed nursing home. We opened in 1989 - Ros and Rob Heath and our respective parents - and we continue to lead it alongside our son, Jay.

Our ethos at Landermeads is simple: the people who come to live with us become part of a family and, as such, they are referred to as 'family members'. As in any family we are committed to ensuring they live well and we base this on the principles of Kitwood's Flower - inclusion, attachment, comfort, occupation, identity and, most importantly. love. Each family member needs to feel loved, that they are part of something and they are valued - in fact, they are not so different from us all. Cognitive challenges can bring communication difficulties so we learn the language of each family member and how they can tell us what they want if we are willing to listen. All staff understand that emotional connections are at the heart of quality of life and that any behaviour of concern is an expression of a feeling; it is our duty to identify that feeling and work together to change it to a positive one.

At Landermeads we support older adults living with dementia and have specific households which support them at the different stages of the journey. We also support younger adults living with a learning disability or mental health in Catherine Tam House.

All of us enjoy the opportunity to have a few days away in the luxury of a hotel and then come home. Landermeads is that home - warm, vibrant, full of personal and homely occupation, communal areas which replicate home with integral mini kitchens encouraging family members to participate either actively or by watching. We have no 'us and them' barriers and staff don't wear uniform, have a separate staff room, toilet or favourite mug - we share life with our family members.

We are a nursing home and invest in developing our nurses so that they have a high clinical competence but are able to balance it with an understanding of the emotional needs of the people we support. We have 'grown' many of our nurses here at Landermeads as staff starting their career journey here and we then supported them through their nursing.

Come and visit us if you are considering a placement - you need to 'feel' what we create at Landermeads and decide whether it is the right place for your loved one. We look forward to meeting you.
